Missing Croatian Climber Found Alive on Mount Kinabalu
Croatian climber Mauro Persic, 46, was found alive with multiple injuries on Mount Kinabalu on 7 September 2026, the second day of a search and rescue operation.
He was believed to have entered through a village trail outside Sabah Parks’ management before going missing. He reportedly suffered suspected rib fractures, along with swelling and numbness in his heel.

Can You Climb Mount Kinabalu Without a Guide?

Can You Use an Alternative Trail to Climb Mount Kinabalu?
Only use a route authorised by Sabah Parks for your climb. The standard climb starts at Timpohon Gate, continues to Panalaban Base Camp, then follows the Ranau Trail towards the summit.
The Kota Belud Trail is a steeper alternative from Panalaban that rejoins the route at Sayat-Sayat. Access requires Sabah Parks’ approval during climb registration and is subject to eligibility requirements and availability. It is not an alternative entry point to the mountain. A visible trail or an online route description does not establish permission to use it. Confirm your route and entry point before setting out, and avoid unapproved trails or shortcuts.
