Timpohon Gate, the primary entrance to the Mount Kinabalu summit trail, has received a major facelift. Completed in December 2024, the RM1 million upgrade breathes new life into the iconic landmark, enhancing both functionality and visitor experience.

Located just 4km from the Kinabalu Park Office, Timpohon Gate serves as the official starting point for thousands of climbers annually. With its new design, the gate is now more than a transit point—it has become a vibrant welcome centre for adventurers, day visitors, and photographers alike.

A More Welcoming Start for Climbers

The upgraded Timpohon Gate now features a refreshed observatory platform—Pondok Timpohon—with sweeping views of Mount Kinabalu’s western ridge. Visitors will also find a café operated by Sabah Parks Staff Cooperative (KOKTAS), improved public toilets, and educational boards that highlight the mountain’s geology, trails, and unique biodiversity.

“The RM1 million allocation by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) is a testament to the ministry’s commitment to preserving and enhancing Kinabalu Park as a global treasure,” said Tourism Minister Datuk Christina Liew. “Timpohon Gate is more than just a transit point—it represents the essence of Kinabalu Park and reinforces its standing as a UNESCO World Heritage site.”

Kinabalu Park manager Justinus Guntabid added that the upgrades were designed to create a harmonious blend of comfort and conservation, giving visitors a place to rest while taking in the natural surroundings—including the local flora, fauna, and playful wild squirrels.

In 2024 alone, Timpohon Gate saw 48,342 climbers pass through its checkpoint—averaging 132 per day—with March being the busiest month due to favourable weather conditions.
